What is a Healthy Relationship?

A healthy relationship is one in which both individuals can communicate openly and honestly. Friends are able to share feelings, discuss problems, and support one another. THERE IS NO ROOM FOR FEAR IN A HEALTHY FRIENDSHIP!

In a healthy relationship, you don’t care about how the other looks or what they wear!

  • In a healthy friendship, you feel safe physically.
  • Your partner respects you and your body.
  • Your partner does not want you to do anything that frightens you or makes you feel uncomfortable.

In a healthy friendship, you are free to grow mentally.

  • Your friend encourages you to get an education.
  • Your friend wants to see you succeed in life and supports your plans for the future.
  • In a healthy friendship, you generally experience positive emotions but work through unpleasant times together.
  • Your friend is caring, affectionate and communicates openly his/her feelings.

Warning Signs of an Abusive Relationship

  • your partner uses jealousy as a sign of love instead of insecurity
  • your friend belittles you
  • your partner controls what you do, who you see and where you go
  • your partner makes constant accusations of cheating
  • your friend lies to you, talks about you behind your back
  • your friend abuses alcohol or other drugs
  • your friend tries to buy you with gifts

ABUSE TEACHES US THAT POWER AND CONTROL, SHAME, SECRECY, FEAR, DISTANCE, NUMBING OF EMOTIONS AND DISTRUST ARE THE BASIS FOR ALL RELATIONSHIPS.

ABUSE IS TRAINING FOR ALL ADDICTIONS AND COMPULSIVE BEHAVIORS.

WHEN WE EXPERIENCE ANY OF THESE ELEMENTS IN A FRIENDSHIP WHETHER THAT RELATIONSHIP IS WITH ANOTHER PERSON, A SUBSTANCE, OR A COMPULSIVE ACTION, WE ASSUME THAT THE FEELING (THE HIGH) WE ARE HAVING IS LOVE.
