Sexual Violence is a non-legal term that refers to any type of unwanted sexual behavior or contact that occurs without freely given consent. Reasons someone might not consent include fear, age, illness, disability, and/or influence of alcohol or other drugs. Those who sexually abuse can be acquaintances, family members, trusted individuals or strangers. Sexual violence is an intensely personal offense that can have both physical and emotional consequences on the victim. ​​
Stats: 
  • Every 73 seconds an American is sexually assaulted.
  • Most sexual assault victims are under 30 (15% 12-17, 54% 18-34, 28% 35-36 and 3% 65 and older). 
  • 1 of 6 American women and have been the victim of an attempted or completed rape in her lifetime and 1 out of 10 rape victims are male.
  • 55% of sexual assaults occur at or near the victim’s home 
  • 93% of perpetrators are known to the victim (59% are acquaintances, 34 % are family members)
